Potential application of probiotics in safe production in the Mekong Delta

In the Mekong Delta, rice farmers use organic fertilizers and biological pesticides more and more. Research results help reduce production costs and protect the environment.

Advantages of organic fertilizers

Dr. Trinh Quang Khuong – Head of Agronomy Department (Mekong Delta Rice Institute) has noted from research and experiment activities in the field about the features, efficiency, and superiority of microbial organic fertilizer products and other products. waste creates land in accordance with the orientation of sustainable and safe rice production.

The Mekong Delta has two main sources: industrially produced organic fertilizers such as biological organic, microbial organic, mineral organic and plant residues and by-products. In the Mekong Delta, the amount of organic fertilizers used to fertilize crops is seriously imbalanced compared to inorganic fertilizers, because the raw materials for the production of organic fertilizers are being seriously wasted.

Microbial organic fertilizers are preparations in which beneficial microorganisms are present. In organic fertilizers, there are many groups of beneficial microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes used to make fertilizers and improve soil. Among them are important groups of microorganisms that fix nitrogen, dissolve phosphorus, decompose organic matter, stimulate plant growth, etc.

According to Dr. Trinh Quang Khuong, recording the actual production efficiency from cropping models when applying microbiological organic products for sustainable agricultural development is the balance of inorganic – organic fertilizers. There have been many research results that have proven that on most soils, inorganic fertilizers have a very close relationship with organic fertilizers.

Organic fertilizer application increases the efficiency of using nitrogen by 30-40%, phosphate by 20-25% and can replace 30-40% of potassium fertilizer with 10 tons of organic fertilizer/ha. When applying this organic fertilizer to rice and corn crops, the amount of chemical fertilizer decreases by 20-30%, the crop yield increases by 10-15%, contributing to saving production costs and increasing economic value. economy for farmers.

If all the post-harvest rice straw in the country about 50 million tons is treated, it will yield more than 3 million tons of organic fertilizer, farmers do not have to spend money to buy chemical fertilizers (NPK) of 220,000 tons of nitrogen, 200,000 tons of fertilizer. tons of phosphorus and 480,000 tons of potassium.

Research results at the Mekong Delta Rice Institute show that continuous application of straw organic fertilizer at 6 tons/ha/crop and combined application of 60% of chemical N, P, K fertilizers as recommended, rice yield is higher than that of rice straw. with 100% chemical fertilizer N, P, K fertilizer completely. Thus, the source of organic fertilizer from rice straw, if applied for a long time over many years, can help reduce 40-60% of chemical N, P, and K fertilizers according to the recommended levels and give equivalent rice yields.
